Precision ball screws: key components for increasing efficiency
The ball screw drive is the entirety of a screw drive with balls as rolling elements. It is used to convert a rotary motion into a longitudinal motion or vice versa. Their ability to move high loads efficiently and precisely makes them a preferred choice in demanding technical environments.
The performance and accuracy of a ball screw is highly dependent on manufacturing accuracy. Our ball screws are manufactured in accuracy classes IT3, IT5, IT7 and IT10 in accordance with DIN ISO 3408 (formerly DIN 69051).
On request, we can supply lead protocols for the ball screws (these are standard for IT3).
The function of ball screws
A ball screw consists of a threaded spindle and a ball screw nut, between which balls are located. The balls roll between the ball screw thread of the spindle and the nut. This enables low-friction movement.
Compared to conventional threaded spindles (such as trapezoidal threaded spindles), the lower friction enables more efficient power transmission. The result: higher positioning accuracy, longer service life.
Ball screw / ball screw spindle
The ball screw is the rotating part of the ball screw drive. It is a cylindrical shaft with one or more spiral grooves in which the balls roll.
A distinction is made between positioning and transport ball screws.
- Positioning ball screw spindles are used for applications with increased demands on the running characteristics, e.g. in machine tool construction.
- Transport ball screw spindles are used in handling and conveyor technology.
The spindle thread is available in a rolled, whirled or grinded version, depending on requirements.
Specification of our ball screws
Diameter: We manufacture ball screws in diameters from Ø 4 – Ø 160 mm.
Pitch: As a rule, the maximum pitch is equal to the nominal diameter. Larger pitches and special pitches (including inch pitches etc.) are possible on an individual basis.
Screw length: Screw lengths up to 7 m are manufactured in one piece and are standard. Ball screw drives with longer spindles are available on request. Spindle lengths of up to 15 m have already been realized.
Ball screw nut
The ball screw nut is the heart of the ball screw drive. It enables linear movements with high precision, speed and efficiency. It contains balls that roll in the thread grooves of the spindle and thus enable movement with minimal rolling friction, in contrast to the sliding friction of trapezoidal screw nuts.
Turning the spindle causes the nut to move linearly along the spindle. Conversely, the spindle can also be rotated by moving the nut.
The matching ball screw nuts can be manufactured according to DIN standards, in-house standards or customer drawings. You decide whether you want to use a single nut or a double nut for the ball screw drive.
For long spindles, we offer driven nuts as an alternative, which are supplied with a complete bearing package.
Ball profiles
The ball profile depends on your requirements. Depending on the pitch or load, ball profiles from Ø0.6 to Ø20 are used.
