Trapezoidal screw drives enable efficient and stable power transmission
Trapezoidal screw drives are indispensable elements of modern drive technology. They convert rotary movements precisely into linear movements and thus provide a reliable basis for numerous applications in mechanical engineering.
Their particular importance lies in the combination of high load capacity, good running characteristics, reliability and economical production. They have therefore become an indispensable part of the industrial environment.

Structure and function
Trapezoidal screw drives comprise spindles with trapezoidal thread profiles and matching threaded nuts. The trapezoidal shape creates a larger contact surface between the screw and nut. This makes the trapezoidal screw drive particularly stable and resilient.
The trapezoidal screws are usually made of tempered steel and form the centrepiece of the system. Trapezoidal screw nuts (trapezoidal screw drive nuts), often made of bronze or other high-quality materials, ensure optimum sliding properties with minimum friction.
Functionality
As the trapezoidal threaded spindle rotates, the trapezoidal threaded nut moves along the spindle axis. And with it the component that is attached to the nut. This mechanism is particularly suitable for applications such as lifting devices where loads are moved with high accuracy.
Thanks to the trapezoidal thread structure, trapezoidal screw drives offer self-locking. This prevents the nuts from turning back under load. This represents a major safety advantage.

Efficient power transmission for demanding machines
Our trapezoidal screw drives combine reliability and durability. The trapezoidal screw spindle guarantees high load-bearing capacity and outstanding stability..
The advantages of our trapezoidal screws at a glance
- Load capacity and load-bearing capacity: trapezoidal screws are ideal for heavy-duty applications and ensure even load distribution. Thanks to their special geometry, they can absorb higher axial forces than many comparable screws with other thread profiles.
- Self-locking: Due to their pitch, many trapezoidal threads have a natural self-locking function for lifting and clamping devices, which prevents unintentional backdriving. This property is particularly advantageous in applications where unintentional loosening of the connection is to be prevented. The self-locking effect depends on the lead angle and the friction coefficient of the thread.
- Durable and easy to maintain: Thanks to the robust design and the specific choice of materials, our trapezoidal screw drives are particularly wear-resistant. The standardised thread pitches in accordance with DIN 103 ensure a high degree of fitting accuracy and make it easy to replace parts. In addition, the standardised dimensions and tolerances ensure a uniform flow of force.
The standardised manufacturing process also makes the production of trapezoidal screws very cost-effective. They are therefore generally cheaper than ball screw drives.

Manufacturing process
Trapezoidal screw drives can be manufactured in different ways.
We select the optimum process depending on your requirements and the specific application conditions.
Thread rolling
Thread rolling is the most economical manufacturing process for larger quantities and standard threads. Chipless cold forming significantly improves the material properties of the base material.
In contrast to machining processes, the natural grain pattern is retained, which optimises the mechanical properties. The compaction of the material during the rolling process leads to increased strength and wear resistance of the thread flanks.
The smooth surface created by rolling significantly reduces friction during subsequent operation. This leads to higher efficiency and lower energy consumption. In addition, the thread geometry results in an optimum fit to the nut threads. However, rollers are not suitable for all tasks. Other manufacturing processes are more favourable, especially for high temperatures or special precision applications.
Thread peeling (whirling)
The whirling process has become established for the production of small series. In this machining process, a tool gyroscope rotates around the raw material bar. The eccentric position of the gyroscope enables targeted skiving of the thread profile. In combination with the axial feed, this design produces a uniform thread of high quality.
The whirling process is characterised by its flexibility: Tools can be used regardless of diameter, profile and pitch. The comparatively low tool costs make the process economically attractive, primarily for small batch sizes. Another advantage is the ability to machine induction-hardened and difficult-to-machine materials.
Thread grinding
As a machining process with geometrically indeterminate cutting edges, thread grinding has a special status. Due to the longer machining times and the associated higher costs, it is mainly used for special requirements. The process is suitable for producing multi-start threads and for machining spindles with lengths of more than 4.8 metres.
Thread grinding is particularly important in the production of special profiles and spindles with increased accuracy requirements. There is often no alternative when manufacturing threaded spindles for hydrostatic screw drives. In these cases, the high accuracy and surface quality achieved by grinding justify the increased time and costs involved.
Load capacity and load bearing capacity
The load capacity of trapezoidal screws depends on various factors such as material pairing, surface quality, surface pressure, duty cycle, lubrication and temperature. For an application with a high load capacity, it is also necessary to calculate the required nut length.
This is done on the basis of specific requirements such as feed rate and available installation space. Suitable materials and smooth surfaces help to extend the service life and reduce wear.

The versatility of our trapezoidal screws is reflected in their wide range of applications. They are used in the following applications, among others:
- Machine tools
- Lifting devices
