An adjustable nut for ball screws is a special type of ball screw nut designed to allow the axial play between the screw and the nut to be precisely adjusted or completely eliminated. This enables the ball screw to be optimally adapted to requirements regarding rigidity, precision, and wear compensation.
Purpose of the adjustable nut
- Eliminating Axial Play: The existing play between the balls and the raceway can be reduced by readjustment.
- Improved positioning accuracy: important for precision applications such as CNC machinesor measuring axes.
- Adaptation to operating conditions: Wear can be compensated for over time.
- Increased Stiffness: A higher preload setting increases the stiffness of the ball screw.
Operating Principle
Adjustable nuts have design features that allow the preload to be varied, for example:
- Slotted or split nut, which is tightened using clamping screws
- Adjustment rings or shims that regulate axial play
- Double nuts, in which two nuts are tightened against each other (the most common type)
These mechanisms slightly alter the spacing between the ball raceways, causing the balls to be clamped more tightly or more loosely: the preload increases or decreases.
Advantages
- Long service life because the clearance can be adjusted
- High precision thanks to customized preload
- Optimal adaptability to different load conditions
Disadvantages
- Higher cost than standard nuts
- Installation requires care, as excessive preload can lead to premature wear
- Deformation becomes more critical at high preload
